UPDATE ON UPMINSTER TRAFFIC SCHEME |
A comprehensive scheme to improve traffic flow in Upminster Town Centre was approved by Highways Advisory Committee on 18th October. In summary the scheme covers:-
- Re phasing of the Bell Corner lights to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety
- Providing four loading bays, two in Corbets Tey and two in Station Road
- Provision of increased parking bays in Corbets Tey Road
- The build out of pedestrian crossings in Corbets Tey Road .
- Introduction of double yellow lines in Station Road and St. Mary's Lane.
- Extension of double yellow lines in Tudor Gardens .
- Introduction of Pay and Display parking and the removal of Disc parking.
To facilitate these plans, the railings by Upminster Park will be removed from the edge of the pavement to the edge of the park, although the original railings will be retained.
Parking discs bought before the introduction of Pay & Display bays will be able to be used in those spaces until the disc expires. These changes are hoped to be introduced by the end of the year, although this may be optimistic.
Although the moving of railings by the Park is regrettable, it does enable the increase of parking spaces for shoppers. The effects of these changes will be closely monitored to ensure they are having the planned benefits.
There will be further proposals for parking/loading to the rear of Aldi's. It has been proposed that the currently un-named service road running behind Aldi's be named Chestnut Road . Cllr Linda Hawthorn felt this was a good way of recognising the historic connection with the now removed large Chestnut tree that used to stand here.
