BEWARE COUNCIL TAX SCAM

There are always some unscrupulous people around employing all sorts of scams to extract money from unsuspecting residents. The latest scam involves someone purporting to be from the council informing residents about overpayments of council tax and that a refund may be due. They then go on to ask for bank, card and other personal details.

Cllr Clarence Barrett said: “I was alerted to this scam by colleagues from a nearby local authority. Residents should be on their guard about unsolicited calls about council tax refunds or anything else involving personal bank account details. Bona fide organisations, such as the Council, would never ask for such information over the phone”.
