FOUL SMELL DETECTED TO FARMLAND

Many residents in the Harold Wood, Cranham and Upminster area may have noticed a foul smell lingering over the area during the summer. The source has been identified as a large parcel of farm land close to junction 29 of the M25 (outside of the borough), which Anglia Water are using to dispose sewage sludge on agricultural land.

A number of residents have questioned the legality of this activity and potential health effects upon people affected by the odour, but it appears that the practice is permissible and overseen by the Environment Agency.

The water companies are responsible for ensuring that the sludge is treated appropriately. However this may not be sufficient to deal with the odours of the sludge and certain batches of sludge can be particularly odorous. This odour is released when it is first delivered and then again when it is spread.

Cllr Clarence Barrett (Cranham, RA) said: “I have had a number of complaints about a foul smell lingering over the area during the summer. Excellent investigative work by council officers located the source of the problem, but it appears that it is legally permissible for Anglia Water to dispose of sewage sludge in this way.

“Whilst there may be benefits to the agricultural industry in using bio-solids as fertiliser, there should be due regard to residents who have to put up with the offensive smell given off as a consequence.”

Residents are encouraged to contact the Environment Agency on 08708 506 506 to report concerns about this practice.
