PeruCllr Linda Van Den Hende (Upminster, RA) tackled the rough terrain of the Peruvian mountains in a charity trek which covered 42kms in 4 days. The epic challenge earned £3,200 for the National Deaf Children's Society.

Cllr Van Den Hende said: “ The trek itself was very hard and much tougher than I had expected.  Lots of steps up and many down, and at high altitude, which makes it much harder. We walked for up to 9 hours a day. It rained and we had hot sun, not ideal if you are carrying a rucksack of about 5 Kgs!

“Sleeping in a tent on rocks at an angle leading down to a fast flowing river added to the experience. Getting to Machu Picchu , having got up at 4.00am , just as the sun hits the ruins was worth every step.  It is an amazing place.

“Very many thanks to all those who sponsored us.  We have almost reached our target for the National Deaf Children's Society and all the money raised will go to that very worthy cause”.
