NO BUS LANES FOR UPMINSTER

Radical proposals to install bus lanes in Upminster were refused at the Upminster Area Committee (5/2/08).

The Area Committee, which is made up of all six Upminster and Cranham councillors, looked at plans from Transport for London (TfL) to install a 100 metre bus lane in Corbets Tey Road (approaching Bell Corner), a 130 metre stretch in Station Road (towards Bell Corner) and a 195 metre lane in St Mary's Lane (approaching Bell Corner from Hornchurch). Also considered was a raft of measures including moving bus stops, creating clearways, parking restrictions and pay & display bays.

The total cost of all schemes is estimated at £973,000 which would have been funded from TfL.

Cllr Clarence Barrett (Cranham, RA) said: “The approach seems to be bus lanes by sledgehammer. There are far more negatives to these plans than perceived benefits and we therefore turned down the proposals”.
