AN ADVERT TOO FAR FOR HAVERING?

The Council Cabinet (16.1.08) agreed plans to raise £500,000 through advertising across the borough.

Among the Council assets that may be leased out for advertising purposes are hoardings, building wraps, lamp posts, roundabouts, street furniture, council vehicles, boundary signs, subways and car parks. Also considered will be council leaflets and website.

Responding to the plans, Shadow Cabinet Member for Resources, Cllr Clarence Barrett said: “It is important to consider the aspects of hard advertising (eg hoardings, lamp posts, etc) on our street scene and the aesthetic impact. Raising £500,000 a year will mean alot of advertising and councillors and residents need to be involved in any proposals.

“Advertising by its very nature is intrusive and we need to be careful not to turn our borough into one big advertising slogan”.

Whilst many of the larger proposals would be subject to planning permission, the Council have already drawn up an initial list of potential ‘lots' and have begun a process of tendering for a framework contract that would enable it to lease land and assets in return for an income.
