GOVERNMENT PROPOSE
NEW 'DEATH TAX'
|
Concerns have been raised over a government proposal to introduce a 'death tax' for recently bereaved families. The scheme would impose a 'death registration fee' of between £130 and £170 to check the cause of death when a relative passes away.
The scheme is designed to pay for medical and support staff to ensure the correct cause of death is recorded.
Cllr Clarence Barrett, (Cranham, RA), said: "Not only will the scheme put an extra burden on families at a time of great distress, but there will also be a cost to local councils who will have to administer such a scheme on behalf of the government."
Every year there are around 390,000 deaths in England and Wales which would raise an estimated £66 million per annum.
